Designer Maarten Baas was throwing the design world on its ear before he even graduated from the Design Academy of Eindhoven. His early successes such as the ‘Smoke’ collection came amongst an absolute global frenzy for collectible design in the early 2000s.
Always ahead of his time, Baas’s ‘Clay’ collection debuted in response to the excesses of highly produced, calculated and very expensive design that originally gave rise to his work. The ‘Clay’ collection did away with the pretenses of the recent past by evoking a child-like naivety with a focus on freedom and spontaneity. The pieces are produced in a simple manner by molding a self-hardening clay around a steel frame. These very personal, idiosyncratic works are now part of museum collections worldwide.
